How common are these non-UK company types? My understanding was that FreeAgent is a UK accounting product?
We’re trying to decide how to handle them in our integration. Perhaps we don’t need to in practice?
We won’t publically talk about the splits in terms of company types. But from a technical point of view, while FreeAgent primarily targets the UK market, we do have companies who fit all these types. The reason we have such a fine grained breakdown for US companies is that back in 2012 we did a limited expansion to the US. While that is no longer a primary audience for us, we do have a smaller number of these folks.
Universal companies are used by people running UK companies as well, especially folks running charities. Not all charities are constituted in a way that the UK specific tax filing we support is useful to them. So they use only our accounting features and handle all their other compliance filing elsewise.
The particular thing you need to pay attention to for both these company types is sales tax. In the API, you’ll see this as sales tax periods (which applies to Universal and US company types only).
