Getting ID's/References to existing entities

If I have entered say Contacts manually, and I then want to add Projects
via the API, how do I find out the Contact ID so that I can attach the
correct Project to the correct Contact. Same goes for Project ID’s, Task
ID’s and so on. From what I can see in the documentation it doesn’t look
as if the response to a GET for any of these entities includes the ID.

Most of them include a URL property, which is the ID
