Dark Mode for Web / Desktop

It’s 2025 and dark mode should be a standard option on all website for years now.

The app has it, but serious business is done on a desktop.

Thanks.

Hi there

James from FreeAgent here. Thanks for reaching out, I’ve logged this internally as a feature request. This means this will get triaged by the correct team for consideration in due course.

All the best,

James

I support this request for Dark Mode

I have been requesting this from Freeagent for 2 years and, in spite of the overwhelming evidence that users globally want dark mode, still they refuse to add it to the roadmap.

+1 from me

Research and surveys indicate a strong preference among users for dark mode across digital platforms. Studies show that over 80% of users now enable dark mode on their smartphones and computers. For instance:

  • A 2024 analysis revealed that approximately 82% of smartphone users and 82.7% of desktop users opt for dark mode, citing reduced eye strain and energy savings as key reasons.
  • Younger audiences, especially those aged 18-29, favor dark mode, with adoption rates as high as 89% in this group.
  • Additionally, 64.6% of users expressed interest in websites automatically adapting to dark mode settings, highlighting its growing demand among online users.

Dark mode is also popular among developers and professionals, with 70% of software developers reporting that it helps reduce eye fatigue during extended screen use. This widespread adoption underscores its importance for user-centric digital design strategies, including website and app development.

I honestly get the impression that FreeAgent has been partially abandoned and is just in patch mode

Hi all,

Thanks for your messages. We really do take all feature requests seriously, and write them up internally for consideration. I appreciate it’s been a while since this was first requested- sometimes when this much time has passed it can feel like it’s just been forgotten about, which I can assure you it hasn’t been. I’ve written up another report for it (each time there’s another request we do this, so it’s like another “vote” for it) so demand can be monitored.

It can be very challenging sometimes where to strike the balance- we have a lot of great things being built (and that have been built!) that are very high priority so it’s hard to fit in everything. If there’s one thing FreeAgent isn’t, it’s abandoned! If you want more details of all the things we’ve been up to, then our blog (here) is a great place to keep updated and see what we’ve been building. I personally love dark mode, so I understand the passion for it- but I hope this helps reassure you that the request hasn’t been forgotten or ignored, and certainly no abandoning going on here!

Cheers :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi Carly,

Thank you for your detailed response and for acknowledging the demand for Dark Mode. While I appreciate that FreeAgent tracks feature requests through user “votes,” I’d like to respectfully challenge the assumption that this is the best (or only) way to prioritize development.

Industry research overwhelmingly supports Dark Mode as a highly desired feature, not just for aesthetic preference, but for accessibility, reduced eye strain, and improved battery life on modern devices. Studies from major tech firms (Apple, Google, Microsoft) and UX research groups consistently show that Dark Mode is no longer a niche request but an expected standard in modern software. Many users may not actively request it simply because they assume it’s already in the pipeline, given its prevalence elsewhere.

Relying solely on user requests to guide development can lead to a reactive rather than proactive approach. By the time a feature reaches critical mass in your feedback system, competitors may have already implemented it, putting FreeAgent at a disadvantage. Innovation often means anticipating needs, not just responding to them.

I urge FreeAgent to consider:

  1. Industry benchmarks – Most major accounting and productivity tools now offer Dark Mode.
  2. Silent demand – Many users won’t submit requests but will still appreciate the option.
  3. Technical debt – The longer Dark Mode is delayed, the harder it may be to implement cleanly as the UI evolves.

It’s about aligning with best practices and showing users that FreeAgent is forward-thinking. Could you share whether internal research or UX studies inform these decisions, beyond user requests?

Thanks for your time and consideration. I hope FreeAgent can reevaluate this with a broader perspective.
