Additional text to invoice

Is there any way to add additional text to an invoice via the api.
We are trying to add something along the lines of “This invoice will be
paid via your standing order”. and for that text to drop into the default
invoice template - i.e. as it would when adding additional text via the web
interface.

Or maybe someone else has an alternative way to achieve this functionality?
