# Self assessment

Is a self assessment always attached to a user, never the “company” (i.e. `UkSoleTrader`)?

Does FreeAgent assume every user needs a self assessment?

Is there a way of determining whether a user actually needs a self assessment? i.e. a client might have added an accountant, or just a member of staff for bookkeeping, who doesn’t need an SA.

Hi robm, apologies for not getting back to you sooner.

Yes, we generate Self Assessment returns for all users since it relates to an individual. The business income and expenses feed into the individual’s tax return.

We calculate Self Assessment for all users except those with the “Accountant” role. Although it does not mean every user is legally required to submit a tax return. You can find out more about who needs to send a tax return on the [Gov.uk](https://www.gov.uk/self-assessment-tax-returns/who-must-send-a-tax-return) website.
